The short answer
If you are a visitor landing at Incheon Airport Terminal 1, buy your limousine bus ticket at one of the booths near the exits before you go outside, then board at the stop for your route. Three routes at Terminal 1 will take cash or a transit card at the door, but everywhere else a ticket comes first and ticket holders board ahead of you. Where are the ticket booths?
At 인천국제공항 (Incheon International Airport) Terminal 1 they are not in one place, which is why people walk past them. Terminal 1 bus ticket booths are inside the terminal next to exits 4 and 9, and outside near exits 4, 6, 7, 8, 11 and 13.
So if you have come out of arrivals and cannot see a booth, look along the row of exits rather than assuming there is a single counter somewhere central.
Do I need a ticket before I board?
On most routes, yes. 공항리무진 (Airport Limousine bus) sells before boarding: Towards the city: buy a ticket at the staffed booth or the vending machine at the airport before boarding. Ticket holders board first, including on late-night buses..
There is one exception, and it applies only at this terminal: Routes 6001, 6002 and 6015 at Terminal 1 only are first-come, first-served, and accept cash, a transportation card or a ticket.
Even where you may board without one, a ticket is still worth having: Ticket holders board first, and this includes late-night buses. After a long flight, standing aside while ticket holders fill the seats is the outcome to avoid.
How is Terminal 2 different?

Where do the shuttle buses stop?
The airport's own shuttles are a separate system from the city buses, and they use marked bays on the same level: AIRPORT 01 stops at Passenger Terminal 1 3C and 13C on the 1st floor, across from Gates 3 and 13. That service runs 04:30–24:00 at intervals of 8-16 minutes.
Do not join that queue expecting a city bus — it goes to the parking lots.
What if my bus leaves soon after I land?
This is the mistake worth avoiding. Allow 1-2 hours for immigration after the flight lands before a booked departure.
A departure booked tightly against your scheduled landing does not survive a slow queue at immigration or a wait at the baggage belt. Buy on arrival for the next departure rather than committing in advance, unless you have a wide margin.
If something goes wrong at the terminal, the airport publishes a general line: 1577-2600, staffed 07:00–22:00.

Can I board without buying a ticket first at Terminal 1?
